Questant's Lament

by Thomas Ferkol

hs-music-daily:

Questant’s Lament

I can virtually always recognize a song by Eidolon right away. That’s not to say they all sound the same, of course, but they do share an unmistakable subdued sort of feeling that ironically makes them stand out by not standing out.

Quiet, sombre bells form the base of this piece. Then the main melodies come in. They feel reflective, asking what could have been, but more importantly: what comes next?

Lotus (Bloom)

Lotus (Bloom)

crazy-8:

So you’ve just gotten through Toby’s exciting little theme for the events of the scratch called “Judgement day” and you notice there is one track remaining before “Cascade”.  That track is known as “Lotus (Bloom)” or as I like to call it, “The calm before the storm”.  It’s another delicious beatfox song and I think one of his best yet, taking the relatively somber and peaceful “Lotus” from the overwhelming volume 5, and expanding it into a grandiose symphony.

The song starts simple enough, with a note to note copy of Lotus, however there is something different about it.  It sounds cleaner and more refined, the flute sounds a lot better and there is some added percussion as well.  However as soon as 1:41 hits, the song starts changing.  The flute is replaced by an oboe, and the song starts slowly transposing upwards, as if to give a hopeful feel to the listener, before exploding into a near fully orchestrated version, with the flute still taking center stage…and then it starts to descend, the hopeful feeling is replaced by unease and suspense as the flute slowly comes to a stop.

I mentioned earlier that I call it “The call before the storm”, and I really believe its just that, the song is placed just before the big finale that is “Cascade” and the suspense that builds at the end is a perfect intro to that climax.  The Lotus is about to bloom after all…what lies inside?  Only one way to find out.

Let's All Rock the Heist

Let’s All Rock the Heist

First, since I’m sure some of you have wondered:

it’s like robbin’ a bank at point blank with a loaded gun loaded with blanks unloading and cycling up in the air
flinging backwards
overprepared

It starts off with a simple but catchy rhythmic buildup. And then there’s even more rhythm of varying intensities, a few short melody stings, and RJ making bloopy noises with his mouth (his words). This sounds like it would make for a pretty basic song, but it still manages to sound cool, even classy in its own way.

I’m not going to say much about the lyrics (such as they are), just that they tie into the title and reinforce the whole idea of the song being about shady criminal-types, be they 1920’s mobsters or more the modern gangsters that people rap about being.

And then it ends with more bloopy noises.

oooh

Nightmare

by Malcolm Brown

hs-music-daily:

Nightmare

This is every bad fever dream I’ve ever had.

We pick up on the eerie minimalism where the previous track left off. Sounds are coming from all directions, both familiar and alien. We press onward through the mystery, hounded by our demons at every corner.

Suddenly, without warning, the beat picks up and the chase begins. But who - or what - is pursuing us? There’s the unmistakable sound of a wolf, yet we must remember that this is all in the mind. Is it a true external threat we fear, or a disturbing aspect of ourselves?

And then, right when it seems to be over, we’re back where we started. Is there no escape?

wwretched wwaltz

by Robert Blaker

hs-music-daily:

wwretched wwaltz

The opening is a bit weak (too repetetive, perhaps?), but this is still probably my favorite song on the Ancestors album.

It’s nicely split down the middle to make it about the two different sides of Dualscar: the elegant noble and the pirate scumbag. Looking at it that way, I suppose you could argue that the slight awkwardness of the first half is intentional; he hasn’t got his heart set on the whole nobility thing and would much rather just sail and steal.
